Everything is related to everything else, but… wait, what?


Is everything a network?

It’s easy to start thinking of everything as a network, which quickly leads to… “well, if everything is a network, then nothing is” and other such philosophical conundrums. When does network thinking fall down and stop being a useful frame?


“but near things are more related than distant things”

What should we understand by “near” in the much quoted second clause of Tobler’s dictum?1


How do networks as most often understood in giscience differ from networks in actor-network theory?

To address this question consider the notion of ‘flat ontology’ discussed at various points in the book.2
